IEP Tips

My son's first IEP was about 8 years ago. I felt like I was being stoned in a ring. I swore I would never walk out of another IEP feeling that way again.

I am NO expert, but I know that decisions made in the IEP should be team decisions. Like most teams there will be disagreements and different views.

It is important to be knowledgeable about the process and your role as the child's parents as well as your child's role. We all want what is best for our children, some times it is essential to take out all the emotional stuff first so you can move forward.

I have very specific opinions this year about how things are being handled with my son, but I can't let how that disturbs me get in the way of what my son needs except where I can use it to create plans to assist him no comfort my emotions.

Here is a list of sites where I have found important information. These are certainly far from exhaustive. There are also several groups online with parents sharing their own experiences. There are also FREE Special Education Advocates available in some areas as well. Most are open to phone conversations too.
